This is an in progress shot of a portrait I'm drawing in my heads and hands class. I'm not particularly happy with it at this point. I ended up having to erase and move the eyes down. I have this problem with that, where I push them up higher, or elongate the face...I hope that come Thursday I'll be in less of a crappy mood and be able to get more work done. Nothing kills a drawing more than apathy.

2. How do you style your hair?
If I'm feeling "pretty" I'll make a french pony tail and then take the tail and make it a french twist. Haha, it is so long. Usually I just pull it back in a pony tail in my mad dash out the door.

3. What are you wearing now?
PJ pants, two pairs of socks, a tshirt and a hoodie sweater THEOHSOGLAMOROUSLIFEOFANARTIST!

4. What’s your occupation?
Illustration student, though I have been paid on occasion to make logos and misc characters that belong to my friends. I'm most often paid in coffee and food, so maybe that doesn't count?

5. Do you nap a lot?
I know I should. I need to master napping b/c whenever I try I let myself go at it for 2 hours instead of say 45 mins. :<

6. Who was the last person you hugged?
Undoubtedly, my Nick.

7. What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
I'm not sure, as a student you get so much exposure to amazing shit like 24/7. Currently I'm loving Steampunk, gouache painting, Disney and Pixar Visual Dev work, local food carts (OMG SF RAMEN TRUCK) and of course cycling (but not like a lot lately, w/ school and the miserable cold weather. I really need to get some winter cycling clothes).

8. What was the last thing you ate today?
LOL uh pumpkin pie XDDD and mango tea.

9. What books are on your to-read list?
Boneshaker - is on HOLD since I can't read anything for fear of sitting down and blowing a whole day on a book w/o noticing. ~_~

What I have left to do and then that I shouldn't be thinking a out that or I won't sleep... then I think about how hard it is for me to fall asleep. It cyclical and I either bore myself to sleep or stress myself out to the point of getting up and doing something.

Um... I accidentally purchased a $11 album off of itunes trying to get a single track of the Utena opening song remixed. Let me tell you, that whole album SUCKS and I'll never buy anything out of sheer boredom again. (Anime Toonz Presents Kikuko Inoue = SO BADDDDD)

15. What is your favorite weather, and why?
A sunny temperate California day down by the reservoir. Some clouds, but mostly cerulean sky stretching over hills of golden grass. This is basically the end of summer, summer at it's most ripe, right before autumn.

16. If you could play any musical instrument, which one would you play?
I would want to relearn the piano. Well, I plan on it someday. SOMEDAY *sigh*

[SotD] Notebook Page Girl

Expanded on an idea from one of the tiny paintings (like 1"x 2") I did in my Ill 1 notebook. It took about 40 min in photoshop, just tracing over the lines, and cleaning them up a bit. My notebook is watercolor paper moleskin and I've been meaning to actually paint the illustrations I put in there. I've only recently started to become comfortable doing it, though. This past term I've taken steps toward being less "precious" with my work; just letting go and having fun. Some of my best ideas come that way, which is of course, nicer than forcing it.

That said, I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with this last assignment. The imagery is all cliche Japanese pretty things. XD I went with it since it makes it easier on myself and it amuses me. Anyway, here's the notebook page, if you're curious.

...but not a drop to drink? I'm pretty frustrated with this gouache tonight. I'm posting, I guess, what I'll be discarding as a "color comp" for that tiger piece I mentioned earlier. I should just turn this thing in as is and work on other resubmits... BUT AHHH I want this to look better, and it is BUGGING ME. So yeah, process shots, if you will. Right now my face shares the expression of the last picture. L'artist n'est pas amusee. (That's prob totally off, someone who knows French, feel free to correct me.)

EDIT: I find the middle shot hilarious. It looks more like a muppet than a tiger. oh god..*cries*

Getting this out early so I don't have to worry about it with my late class tomorrow. The portraits have been fun, if challenging. We can't use pencil, so any misakes are kinda stuck on the page. I threw some value on this one since it was fun. It's Joaquin Phoenix, sort of. I blame the discrepancies on listening to Stephen Colbert & Willie Nelson sing, "Little Dealer Boy" And now my wonder-weed is flaring. Yeah, the lyrics are epic: czech it out.

Just a quick sketch of Ming Doyle, a pretty neat illustrator I found via a classmate of mine. I have, god, I don't know how many more heads left in my 100 head/50 pairs of hands notebook. Actually rushing it has been fun. I just hope I don't get docked for quality. I have no idea how anyone else's notebooks look atm. I've been doing these the past hour and forgot about the time! Or tiger, whatever (I've been calling it a lion all day 0.o). I did not forget today's sketch. (ALMOST! But no heheh.) Um, this was done in pencil and then brushpen, then scanned for a lovely 5 min luxury color treatment in PS. It sucks b/c I am TIRED, sorry. Last night I stayed up über late only to wake up early to continue on my Fable illustration even more this morning (this is the same thing I'd been hammering away at all weekend). I matted it (I hate matting!) and took it to school, wide eyed and full of hope.

Can you tell I'm a little slap happy? That half a Rockstar drink I bummed off a classmate is prob kicking in but enough with the crazy person capslock. Outside of FAIL in the GvG smackdown, it was a good day. I learned a new texture technique with gesso prep that looks to be AWESOOOOOOME! I'll prob post more about it here later. B/c I am a nerd. About art. And stuff.

Our next assignment involves using this texture prep. I'm going to get to paint an animale of my choice. Well, actually I do it twice; one in flat color and one with textured gesso prep. I'm going with a tiger, as you can see here from one of my thumbs. Truth be told, I am horribad at animal illustration, so this is both challenging and exciting. I was already looking to lvl up this area of my "skillz," with an animal anatomy book that should be arriving from Amazon tomorrow (with my very own copy of Boneshaker so I don't have to visit B&N to read it in parts!). I also picked up highly recced "How to Draw Animals" book from Borders today on my lunch for about $12. Supposedly it is kind of odd for female illustrators not to be able to draw animals, the stereotype being they grow up drawing kittehs and bunnehs and whoresies, while boys draw buff dudes with guns or some shit ( I am SO eloquent tonight it hurts). Personally, I fell into the category of "drawing the naked female figure all teh timez." So now I get to pay the price for all those bewbs I drew. Yeaaah.

Working in ckass, Iooked up "exotic animals" on flickr and turned up some fantastic references. Thanks to these, despite my inexperience, the few thumbnails I knocked out at the end of class actually started to look.... almost... like... animal drawings... kind of.

As you can see, at first my tiger looked more like a drenched bear. D: But I got better! (Let's not talk about that snake...) Anyway, I was GOING to do some more thumbs before bed, when I remembered SOTD! Now I'm tired, and kind of feeling bleh from my dinner of salami, OJ and hummus. So I will give you this and will now away to the bedroom 3 feet yonder and collapse in a manner of the most current fashion. Or something.

(Haha oh, gods, how do I explain this? Um...) I was messing around with painting without outlines in PSCS3. Just working out color values of light and shadow on a cool colored surface with white/cool light. This is why the shadow is a "warmer" purple. Well, it looked more purple in PS. There was a stronger contrast in the program, so I think I gotta punch it up next time so the color converts to jpg better.

I didn't really do this today, I made it on a "mental break" yesterday from the homework I'm still working on. Will update once the gouache project is done. We'll see how it turns on (im kinda scared D: ).

[SotD] Pattern Exercize

Not a real sketch today, because I need to get drawing already. But I want to maintain the momentum I've built by posting nearly everyday, my personal creative exercise. Today I looked up how to create a pattern in photoshop out of a shape. I was curious since I REALLY don't want to be digitally painting in every pattern for clothes, especially if it isn't really a main feature of a character's design. It's not too hard. For this I used a floral brush I like. It is turquoise with a green stroke on the outside. I drew or outlined the area of the drape I wanted to fill on a new layer with the selection tool and then warped it a bit as I saw fit. Color overlay and opacity adjustment and voila! I'd have to select/fill/warp individual sections through this method (as far as I know) to get the patterns to flow correctly for the whole drape. I didn't really bother here, since I just wanted to figure out the gist of it and then get moving. Anyway, I hope someone finds this useful (or maybe they'll know a better way and show me). ^^;

Dylan's work is painstakingly researched on the topics of German philosophy, theology, and werewolves! The art, the dialog and historical detail just make me swoon.

Today has been kind of a crazy day. I got about 2 hours sleep after working on my color comp all night. Then biked to kinkos to print it out before heading off to the Powell Street campus for class. I really enjoy Ill1 so I usually end up staying for an extra section of it, the monday/wed night class. I stay for the extra feedback and just continuing my work instead of disrupting the mojo I get going by being there with a commute home. Once I get home, there's no telling if I'm gunna resume work, read a book, watch pr0n, pass out, whatever. So I stay. This gives me a grand total of 10 hours at Powell today WOO! As I posted on twitter, w/in the last 24 hours I've consumed 2 lattes, 1 (diet) coke, and a half dozen cups of tea. Aaaaaand recently a glass o wine. I am very tired and yet really strung out/hyper (as you can easily imagine). I want to draw like, EVERYTHING that comes to mind. And in being in this state nothings getting drawn 'cause I can't focus. Well, I tried *points up at Serith eating a chinchilla -I extremely dislike chinchillas- for a devART meme* Anyway, at least I've got something image wise to post with this blather. :D In case you didn't know chinchilla+sake=win! Apparently. I cannot account for Night Elf appetites.

I know, fail. I couldn't make it look like him/his shape and a giant Rorschach ink blot wasn't terribly menacing (well not to me, it depends I guess). But the rest I sketched out :D I wanted to keep refining this, but I have TON of homeworks. For me, The Meek is an amazing comic first and foremost because of it's creator's strong ties to the natural world. It is wonderfully expressed in their art, every page in RICH color! The main character is Angora, who I didn't draw (here). She's sort of emotionally childlike, but very good, and I think it is going to be awesome to watch her develop. ALSO, she has green hair. You know I lovegreenhair.

(Well, ok, it's looking pretty blue here in the nightime scene. Also, I should mention there is a lot of non-sexual nudity on the part of this character. She's kind of one-with-nature and doesn't need pants?) Anyway!

The Meek is a graphic novel about Angora, an inexperienced young girl who has been sent on a quest to save the world. War looms on the horizon, and at its helm is the Emperor of the North and his hellish adviser. The two countries are overwhelmed with as much terror, crime, disease and revolution as they are with those who wish to create peace. Armed with only her instincts and an unexplainable power, she must experience and judge the world—and decide once and for all if it is truly worth saving.
